Spare ribs and spicy BBQ sauce!

A great number of burgers, sausages, pork chops and spare ribs were sizzling away on backyard barbecues all over the USA this weekend as people celebrated the Fourth of July or Independence Day – becoming independent from Great Britain.

It is an important time for families and friends to get together for picnics and street parties. Barbecued meat, roasted corn-on-the-cob and potato salad, watermelon, apple pie and icecream and cold beer or soda are traditionally served.

The day is marked by public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of the United States going back to 1776 and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Whether enjoying parades – photo from Cedarburg, Wisconsin, a typical small town 4th of July parade – carnivals, fairs, concerts, baseball games or political ceremonies, there is a common feeling of liberty, patriotism and happiness and, as darkness falls, all eyes are raised to the sky for the fireworks.
